Print technologies – Inkjet – Toner/Laser

Inkjet vs Toner benefits

Inkjet

  • Vibrant and vivid colors
  • High print quality with fine details
  • Borderless printing capability
  • Wide color gamut thanks to CMYK mixing
  • Versatile for small to medium print runs
  • Choice between dye-based and pigment-based ink, depending on the application

Toner

  • Fast and reliable printing performance
  • Consistent print quality, even at high volumes
  • Less sensitive to substrate type or coatings
  • Excellent durability and scratch resistance
  • Very high resistance to water, moisture, and UV light
  • Ideal for industrial applications and long-lasting labels

Inkjet technology

Inkjet label printers use liquid ink that is sprayed onto the material (usually a label) in microscopic droplets by the print head. The ink is contained in cartridges and is typically available in four colors: CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black).

This technology is ideal for applications where appearance is important, such as photos and colorful designs. Inkjet produces vibrant, sharp prints and enables borderless printing without white margins.

Dye vs Pigment vs Nano pigment inks

Dye inks

Vibrant colors
Thanks to their wide color spectrum, dye-based inks produce bright, clear, and vibrant prints. By mixing primary colors, virtually unlimited color variations can be achieved.

High print quality
The fine composition of dye ink ensures very sharp and detailed prints, ideal for photos and colorful designs. For the best results, use an inkjet-coated material.

Less durable
Dye inks consist of dyes that dissolve completely in the liquid and therefore penetrate deep into the material. Because they do not consist of solid particles like pigment ink, they do not adhere as well to the surface. This makes them more sensitive to water, UV light, and friction.

Pigment inks

Greater durability
Pigment ink remains on the surface of the material and does not soak into the fibers. This makes the print more resistant to water, friction, and UV light, ensuring a long-lasting and durable result.

Accurate but slightly less fine detail
Because pigment ink is thicker, extremely fine details are slightly more difficult to achieve. Results may also vary depending on the coating. For optimal quality, matte paper or PP materials are often used.

Ideal for industrial applications
Pigment ink is primarily used where durability and readability are crucial. Think of sectors such as pharmaceuticals, cleaning products, and chemical products, where labels must withstand harsh conditions.

Pigmentinkt

Nano pigment inks

Nano pigment

Nano pigment inks consist of extremely fine pigment particles, allowing them to distribute very evenly across the material. This ensures high print quality with sharp details and consistent color reproduction.

Thanks to their advanced formulation, they combine the benefits of pigment ink with improved flow through the printhead. The result is a durable print with strong resistance to water, UV light, and friction, without compromising on detail or color intensity.

Toner technologie

Dry toner technology

A label printer with dry toner technology, also known as a laser printer, uses powder (toner) instead of liquid ink. The toner is applied to the material electrostatically and then fused using heat, causing the print to adhere firmly to the substrate.

This technology is ideal for applications where durability and resistance are key. Think of labels that must withstand water, moisture, UV radiation, and friction, such as in industrial environments, logistics, or the chemical sector.

Extremely high resistance

The advantages of color laser label printers over inkjet printers lie in the fact that there is absolutely no risk of ink bleeding, as this technology uses powder that is fused to the material rather than ink. In addition, the cost per page is significantly lower, depending on the application.

The print speed is significantly higher, because the entire page is processed at once, whereas an inkjet label printer prints a series of narrow strips close together. However, laser/dry toner color label printers still produce halftone images and, with the exception of top-of-the-line models, are less effective at reproducing solid-color images.
